Blood Types

Blood Types

Types

  • A+
  • A-
  • B+
  • B-
  • AB+
  • AB-
  • O+
  • O-

The Rh factor is an addition to blood types, which means that blood groups have two variants:

Positive (Rh+)

Negative (Rh-)

Therefore, A+, B+, AB+, and O+ are the blood types with the positive Rh factor, while A-, B-, AB-, and O- are the blood types with the negative Rh factor.

Who can donate to whom?

Blood compatibility depends on both the blood type and the Rh factor (positive or negative). Here is a detailed list of who can donate to whom, considering both the blood type and Rh factor:

Donor Type A:

  • A+ can donate to A+ and AB+.
  • A- can donate to A+, A-, AB+ and AB-.

Donor Type B:

  • B+ can donate to B+ and AB+.
  • B- can donate to B+, B-, AB+ and AB-.

Donor Type AB:

  • AB+ is the universal recipient, but can only donate to AB+.
  • AB- can donate to AB+, AB-, A+, A-, B+ and B-.

Donor Type O:

  • O+ can donate to A+, B+, AB+ and O+.
  • O- is the universal donor and can donate to A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+ and O-.

Recipients by blood type:

  • A+ can receive from A+, A-, O+ and O-.
  • B+ can receive from B+, B-, O+ and O-.
  • AB+ can receive from A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+ and O- (universal recipient).
  • O+ can receive from O+ and O-.
  • A- can receive from A- and O-.
  • B- can receive from B- and O-.
  • AB- can receive from AB-, A-, B- and O- (universal negative recipient).
  • O- can only receive from O-.

Summary:

  • Universal Donor: O-
  • Universal Recipient: AB+
  • Universal Negative Recipient: AB-

This schema is essential in blood transfusions, and the Rh factor is crucial to avoid adverse reactions. It is always important to consult a medical professional before performing transfusions or donations.
