Formats of Downloaded Videos

When downloading a video, you may notice that its name includes one of the following codes. Here is the definition of each:

  • R5: A commercial DVD from region 5. Region 5 is used across most of Africa and a large part of Asia, including Russia and India.
  • Screener (SCR): A promotional DVD or Blu-ray Disc, often containing messages indicating promotional use and black-and-white scenes. However, its quality is usually very similar to that of commercial DVDs.
  • Telecine (TC): A copy made using a machine that transfers the film from analog reels used by cinema projectors. This format is rarely used because the conversion machines are very expensive and large, but it has roughly the same quality as a DVD.
  • Workprint (WP): A copy of an unfinished version of a film. It may include uncut scenes or lack material that will appear in the final movie.
  • Cam: Both the image and sound are recorded with a video camera, usually in a movie theater. The image quality depends on the recording camera. You may often see audience members walking by, and the sound quality is poor, with echoes, murmurs, coughing, and other ambient noises from the theater.
  • Telesync (TS): The image is recorded in a movie theater with a video camera like the Cam format, but the audio is captured directly from the theater’s main sound system or headphone connectors and then synchronized. It has better quality than a Cam.
  • DVDFull: An exact copy of a commercial DVD. In most cases, it contains the complete content of the original DVD.
  • DVDRip: The movie is extracted from a commercial DVD using codecs that reduce its quality and size. The video and audio are stored in a single AVI file.
  • HDRip: A format similar to DVDRip, but the image and sound are extracted from a Blu-ray Disc, resulting in superior quality.
  • HDTV High Definition Digital: Captured from a high-definition digital broadcast. The quality is better than a DVD, with 1920x1080 pixels.
  • DSRIP Digital Signal: Captured from a satellite signal. The image quality is not as good as HDTV but is still decent.
  • PDTV or Satrip Satellite Digital: Captured from a digital broadcast (via satellite). Quality: almost DVD.
  • TVrip TV via Cable or Air: Recorded from an analog TV broadcast.
  • TDTrip: Recorded from a terrestrial digital television broadcast, similar to DSRIP.
  • BRRip: Sourced from BDRip, an indirect source with superior quality to DVD. Resolutions range from 720×480 and higher, often compatible with DivX home players.
