Everyone who has ever used a computer in their life has experienced the battle against some form of malware, with many of them being more harmful than others. Here we will explain the differences between the various types of malware that can affect our devices:
- Virus: Perhaps the most famous and frequently mentioned of all time, viruses are programs created to harm devices. The damage can range from deleting files to rendering the computer unusable. They are generally acquired by visiting malicious websites, where entering will download the file. They can also be disguised as a common program, and upon installation, the virus appears.
- Spyware: These are programs created with the sole purpose of spying on and stealing information from your computer, such as email passwords, banking account information, etc.
- Adware: These are programs created to display advertisements. They are often hidden in software and install without the user's consent. They don’t cause any damage to the computer but show annoying ads and are easy to remove.
- Malware: This refers to all the malicious programs on this list that can affect a computer.
- Ransomware: These are programs that lock your computer in some way, often holding it hostage until a ransom is paid. The hacker who controls the malware will demand money in exchange for unlocking your computer.
- Worm: These are files that spread throughout the computer, filling it up to the maximum and slowing it down. These files reproduce at a high speed, and while they don’t directly damage the computer, they are very annoying when they fill up storage space.
- Trojan: These are programs created to enter your computer, bringing along malware from this list. The Trojan enters harmlessly and then releases the file that causes damage.
- Keylogger: These are programs created to spy on everything you type. Every key you press is recorded by the program, informing the hacker about everything you’ve written.
