Difference Between Cricket, Grasshopper, and Locust

  • Crickets belong to a family characterized by the following features: tarsi with four segments, well-developed flight organs (rarely absent), long and thin antennae, and relatively short bodies.
  • Grasshoppers have a fastigium (the frontal ridge of the head) without a longitudinal groove, the basal lobe of the posterior femur shorter or equal in length to the upper lobe but never longer, a compressed body, short antennae, tarsi with three segments, robust hind legs adapted for jumping, and wings with varied colors.
  • Locusts move in swarms, jump quickly, have shorter legs compared to grasshoppers, and only fly in large groups for migration. They can devastate a field in just a few hours.
