Parts of the Eye

Our eye is composed of the following parts

Cornea: It is the protruding, anterior part of the eyeball, transparent, and along with the sclera, forms the outer covering of the eyeball.

Iris: It is the colored part of the eye with a circular opening in the center called the pupil. The pupil appears black, but in reality, it is transparent, and all the images we perceive pass through it. The iris is located between the cornea and the lens.

Aqueous Humor: It is a transparent, semi-liquid substance that resembles colorless gel. Its function is to fill the anterior chamber of the eye, and due to its internal pressure, it causes the cornea to become protruding.

Lens: It is a transparent, lens-shaped body located immediately behind the iris, between the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye. Its main function is to allow sharp vision at all distances.

Ciliary Muscle: It is the muscle that helps the lens in visual accommodation.

Vitreous Body: Also known as vitreous humor. It is a transparent substance that fills the inside of the eyeball, giving it an approximately spherical shape, with the protrusion of the cornea.

Sclera: It is an outer layer that surrounds the eyeball.

Choroid: It is a connective membrane located between the sclera and the retina that connects the optic nerve to the ora serrata and nourishes the retina.

Retina: It is the layer that internally covers three-quarters of the eyeball and plays an important role in vision. The retina provides a visual acuity of only 10%, which is poor vision, obtained when only the largest letter in the optotype chart is visible.

Fovea Centralis: Located at the back of the retina, slightly toward the temporal side, it is small in size, and it is where the focal point of parallel rays entering the eye meets.

Optic Nerve: It is a bundle of tubular nerve fibers with some arteries that transmit the images captured by the retina and fovea to the cerebral cortex.

Blind Spot: This small blind spot in our eye is located at the back of the retina, beside the fovea, and it is the point where the retina connects to the optic nerve.

External Muscles: These are responsible for moving the eyeballs. Two of these muscles are known as the superior and inferior oblique muscles, and they are responsible for the eye's rotational movements.
