DVD Zones

Have you ever wondered about the zones on DVDs?

DVDs are divided into different regional zones, which determine the compatibility of a disc with a player depending on the region where it is sold. Each zone has a specific code that ensures the content of a DVD is only played on devices from that region.

Below are the specifications for the DVD regional zones:

  • Zone 1: United States, Canada, and U.S. territories
  • Zone 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East (including Egypt)
  • Zone 3: Southeast and East Asia (including Hong Kong)
  • Zone 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean
  • Zone 5: Former Soviet Union, India, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
  • Zone 6: China
  • Zone 7: Reserved
  • Zone 8: Special international situations (airplanes, cruise ships, etc.)

It’s important to note that these regional codes exist to limit the distribution of content based on geographic location, which can sometimes affect the playback of DVDs purchased in other zones.
